ADK™ LWIR Thermal Imaging Cores

The Teledyne FLIR ADK™ (Automotive Development Kit) is an OEM thermal-imaging camera platform designed to help automotive developers add long-wave infrared (LWIR) thermal vision to ADAS and autonomous-vehicle systems.

Unlike conventional cameras, which depend on visible light, the ADK creates images from heat emitted by objects. This means it can continue to detect pedestrians, animals, vehicles and other objects in conditions where visible cameras can struggle — including darkness, glare and challenging lighting. FLIR specifically positions it as a sensor for applications such as pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking (AEB).

The current ADK range uses a 640 × 512, 12 µm uncooled VOx microbolometer operating in the 8–14 µm LWIR band, with four horizontal fields of view: 24°, 32°, 50° and 75°. It is available with GMSL1 or GMSL2 interfaces; the older USB-C versions are now discontinued/EOL.

In practical terms, the ADK is less a finished automotive perception system and more a rugged, integration-ready thermal sensor for developers: it supplies thermal video that can be fed into perception, sensor-fusion and AI/analytics systems.

A high level overview of what this range offers

  • 640 × 512 thermal resolution Provides substantially more image detail than low-resolution thermal sensors, giving perception algorithms more information for detecting and classifying objects.
  • LWIR 8–14 µm sensing Thermal imaging works from emitted heat rather than visible light, allowing useful detection day or night and in difficult illumination.
  • ≤50 mK thermal sensitivity (NEdT) Enables detection of relatively small temperature differences, helping distinguish people, animals and vehicles from their surroundings.
  • 30/60 Hz full-frame operation Provides sufficiently high temporal resolution for moving-vehicle applications; 9 Hz is also available as an option on the listed models.
  • Four FOV choices: 24°, 32°, 50°, 75° Lets developers trade longer-range detail against wider situational awareness depending on sensor position and ADAS function.
  • GMSL1/GMSL2 automotive interfaces Makes the sensor suitable for integration into vehicle architectures and for transporting thermal video directly into downstream processing/analytics.
  • Rugged IP67 enclosure + heated window Designed for automotive outdoor use, with protection against dust/water and a heated optical window intended to maintain visibility in adverse weather.
  • Compact, low-power package At approximately 35 × 40 × 47 mm and 100 g, with about 1 W camera power without the heater, it is relatively straightforward to package into vehicle sensor architectures.
