MCT detectors offer the highest sensitivity of all IR detectors in the range of 2 – 25 microns. These detectors can be offered either TE, liquid nitrogen, or cooled with a Stirling motor.
TE-cooled MCT detectors
Infrared Associates detectors consist of photoconductive MCT (HgCdTe) sensors mounted on two, three, or four-stage thermoelectric coolers. The standard IR detectors are optimised for wavelength ranges from 2μm to 5μm.
Extended range TE-cooled MCT detectors can be used for ranges up to 10 microns.
To improve the detection efficiency of these devices, optically enhanced MCT detectors with reflective and refractive optical elements are also available. The apparent improved sensitivity and D* of the test detectors is due to the ability of the optical components to focus the energy that would not normally hit the detector on the detector element. These detectors are particularly suitable for applications where the energy either collimates or diverges. The optically enhanced detectors are therefore ideal for applications where fibre optics are used.

Alternatively, optically enhanced TE-cooled HgCdTe detectors are available. Thanks to added reflective and refractive optics, the detectivity rating increases by a factor of 2 – 3. | Other wavelength ranges and element sizes available on request. |
