Trafo Station Monitor

Monitoring of local network transformer stations with the Transformer Station Monitor (TSM) using wireless or wired transmission media.
While network operators have been equipping their high- and medium-voltage networks with monitoring systems for quite some time, the implementation in local network transformer stations is still barely monitored today.
One reason for this is the lack of networking of the transformer stations.

By using the long-range wireless technology LoRaWAN™, local network transformer stations can now be integrated wirelessly into overarching monitoring systems. Another possible wireless transmission medium is mobile communication (LTE, 5G) or wired media such as copper cables or fiber optics.

Use of the Transformer Station Monitor and Networking with LoRaWAN

Network condition data is recorded in the local network transformer station by the Transformer Station Monitor (TSM). The transmission to the central monitoring platform is carried out via the wireless technology LoRaWAN™. This ensures a very high range, and transmission is possible without the need to install additional cables for networking the transformer stations.
Impending network disturbances can thus be detected before shutdowns occur, allowing for early intervention.

Functions:

The system essentially has the following functions:

  • Three-phase voltage measurement, 230 VAC
  • 4 current measurements using analog Rogowski coils with 0-20mA current input
  • or via Modbus RTU for up to 60 current measurements (15×4-phase Rogowski coils or cubes)
  • Short-circuit / earth-fault detector
  • Motion detector with debounce algorithm
  • Door monitoring
  • Temperature measurement with threshold monitoring
  • Digital inputs for processing external alarms
  • Digital outputs for controlling external systems
  • Analog inputs for connecting various sensors
  • Battery backup to maintain communication in the event of a power failure

By using the long-range wireless technology LoRaWAN™, no additional networking of the transformer stations is required.
In good reception conditions, the antenna integrated into the housing can be used.
An external antenna connection allows the antenna to be positioned outside the station.

Analysis Capabilities

Equipped with these functions, the TSM enables precise analysis of the local network transformer station.

  • Assessment of the grid condition
  • Early detection of fault conditions
  • Analysis of outage causes
  • Monitoring of additional parameters such as temperature, humidity, doors, and alarms
  • Resetting of short-circuit shutdowns

The Transformer Station Monitor is custom-configured with threshold values for current, voltage, and temperature and evaluates the current measurements accordingly.
If the thresholds are exceeded or fallen below, or if events occur (e.g., motion, door contact), an "ad hoc alarm" is sent.

In periodic reports, average and peak values are transmitted. This provides the network operator with the necessary information to create a comprehensive overview of the distribution network.

Current Measurement

For current measurement, external current measuring devices are required for the analog input of the measured current values.
Four different types of Rogowski coils and two versions of Cubes are available, covering different measurement ranges.

Rogowski Coils:

  • RoCo1065A 3-piece set; coil with 65mmØ (current range up to 1000A rms)
  • RoCo1065AN 4-piece set; coil with 65mmØ (current range up to 1000A rms)
  • RoCo2110A 3-piece set; coil with 110mmØ (current range up to 2000A rms)
  • RoCo2110AN 4-piece set; coil with 110mmØ (current range up to 2000A rms)

Cubes: for easy installation with small cable distances

  • Cube525A: 3-piece set current measuring device (current range up to 500A rms)
  • Cube525AN: 4-piece set current measuring device (current range up to 500A rms)
