Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing (DFOS) is divided into three types of sensing: Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), and Distributed Stress Sensing (DSS). OFS can provide the precise choice of fibre and cable combination to meet individual requirements.
Applications include monitoring of pipeline conditions, pipeline heat-traces, transportation, oil and gas in-well conditions, industrial process, structural health, but also third-party intrusion/security, and geotechnics.
Another form of FOS is the coil type where a fibre is tightly wound to form a precision coil. Applications include acoustic, hydrophone, accelerometer, and current sensing.

- Special coatings protect the fibres against moisture and hydrogen ingression and/or protect the fibres against chemicals and are resistant to water across the temperature range
- Options include additional coatings and metallisation
- AcoustiSens™ SM fibres for enhanced acoustic sensor applications with improved Optical Signal to Noise Ratio (OSNR) enabling significant improvements in Acoustic Signal to Noise Ratio (ASNR)
- Multimode Grade Index (GI) fibres with ≥ 400 MHz/km bandwidth @ 850 / 1310 nm and ≤ 2 dB/km @ 1300 / ≤4 dB/km @ 850 nm attenuation
- Other markets and applications include datacom in harsh environments, local area networks (LAN) with extended temperature environments
- Accutether fibres can be used in missile guidance and aeronautics applications
- Fibres can be cabled and connectorised as required
