Pure silica optical fibers are the preferred choice in many applications due to a variety of performance advantages.
When a highly transparent pure silica core is coated with HCS® (Hard-Clad Silica), deployment in industries from standard data communication through to laser (high) optical power delivery, spectroscopy, and fiber optic sensing are all possible due to the range of optical wavelengths that can be transmitted.
Usage of a pure silica core instead of a germanium doped core has significant advantages in applications such as fiber optic gyroscopes (FOG) in radiation environments, where the pure silica core fiber offers greatly reduced radiation induced losses.
