HCS fibres are optimised for use at the 650 nm and 850 nm wavelengths. Typically these wavelengths have been chosen for industrial applications in factory automation, however due to the pure silica core being very highly transparent, the fibres are additionally suitable for non-communication applications such as spectroscopy, high-power laser delivery, fibre optic sensors and optical pyrometry.
When using the fibres in communications applications, the HCS durable polymer coating really excels in performance. The OFS Crimp & Cleave termination method allows factory field technicians to connectorise cables using these HCS fibres by directly crimping the connector to the fibre’s cladding. The fibre is then cleaved using reliable hand-held tools with no need for any epoxy or polishing.
