Planar inductors are a low-profile component due to the tooled ferrite core shapes that are available. Planar transformers are suitable in applications where designers need compact and very low height over PCB, typically DC/DC converter in brick size.
Windings are designed on multi-layer PCB which is arranged in panels and manufactured in the highest volume practicable, allowing exact repeatability of leakage inductance and capacitance.
The core flat shape offers a wide surface to dissipate heat generated internally to the component. It is also possible to optimise the core cross-section to reduce power losses.
Planar components are easily embedded into the PCB of the entire application, reducing manufacturing time and improving automation.
