Environmental Sensor Platform with cloud connectivity
Acal BFi’s IoT and Wireless Technology Centre has developed an Environmental Sensor Platform, utilising Sierra Wireless FX30 and data orchestration platform Octave as a smart solution for monitoring and analysing environmental data. This Acal BFi designed platform is developed to measure important environmental parameters such as CO2, particulates, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), temperature, and humidity.
One of the key benefits of this Environmental Sensor Platform capability is its configurable and extendable design, making it easy to integrate into other systems and technologies. The platform also features a standard serial interface, allowing for seamless integration and deployment.

Intelligent agricultural control system
Our IoT and Wireless Technology Centre has successfully handled a project for an intelligent agricultural control system.
The commercial smart home/garden industry customer was looking for a wireless control system consisting of a control unit with smart connected devices, such as pumps, filters, and lighting.
The challenge was to expand the current wired connection with a smart wireless solution.
Acal BFi’s IoT and Wireless Technology Centre faced several challenges, including timing requirements, a wide range of weather considerations, security, voltage supply, synchronisation, and battery operation/energy consumption.
We were required to produce significant commercial volume annually with the wireless solution also needing to be approved and sold in the EU, GB, USA, China, and Japan.
The project was developed in several phases, starting with familiarisation with the DMX-RDM topic and selection of suitable wireless modules. A PoC (Proof-of-Concept) set-up has been successfully created with a development solution based on HW and SW prototypes presented to the customer for final approval.
The conclusion of the concept led to the development offer, which included a pre-series production including field testing.
The final result was a fully developed and functional intelligent control system, meeting all of the requirements and challenges set by the customer.

The new 5G module EM9291 with 4.9 Gbit/s downlink
Acal BFi is introducing the new 5G module EM9291 from Sierra Wireless at Embedded World.
This embedded 5G NR sub-6 GHz module offers a downlink speed of up to 4.9 Gbit/s and an uplink speed of 660 Mbit/s.
Thanks to the automatic 4G and 3G fallback function and integrated GNSS receiver (GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo satellite systems are supported), the EM9291 is suitable for a wide range of IoT applications such as industrial routers, home gateways, industrial and consumer laptops, rugged tablet PCs, video surveillance and digital signage.
The EM9291 is based on the M.2 form factor and is compatible with Sierra Wireless' EM9191 module for easy upgrade to comply with the latest standards and bands, and with the EM7690 module to facilitate migration and differentiation between 4G/LTE and 5G.
