For image or film recording of very fast and macroscopic processes, additional lighting is usually required. Cavitar Ltd. has developed powerful diode lasers for this purpose, which are free of coherence and are able to suppress even strong process light, such as that produced by MAG, MIG, TIG or TIG welding processes, thus enabling very high-contrast film recordings.
The very short and freely selectable laser pulse durations down to 10ns can massively reduce motion blur in very fast processes, such as ignition processes or shock waves and produce very clear images. The short flashes of this laser illumination have the advantage over illumination by a continuous wave laser (CW laser) that the actual process to be observed is not affected by unnecessary heat input from the illumination itself. A basic distinction is made between two versions of the Cavilux systems, the Cavilux HF and the Cavilux SMART system. The HF system delivers more laser power and is therefore used with strong broadband (white) process light, as is the case with all plasma processes. The SMART system on the other hand, delivers very short pulse durations of up to 10 ns, which is very helpful in the area of ultra-fast processes such as shock waves in schlieren images to greatly reduce motion blur.
