LIDAR is an acronym valid for products such as Light Detection and Ranging, or Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging and covers a large family of optical sensing technologies used to determine the position, velocity, the 2D or 3D shape, or other characteristics of distant objects by analysis of the pulsed light reflected from their surfaces. Laser rangefinders are part of the LIDAR sensor family and are products used for distance measurement from few metres to several kilometres.
