How to create a fuller range of permeabilities from the standard Sendust E-core rangeAlthough powder cores are available in several standard permeabilities – including 14, 26, 40, 60, 75 and 90µ – with a variety of shapes and sizes from different producers, some applications may require a permeability that is in between the values of the standard range. Additional permeabilities can be achieved by adding an air gap between the two cores; however, this also has a negative impact of fringing flux and the related loses.

In this paper, we share how different permeability Sendust E-cores can be combined to create a much fuller range of permeabilities between the minimum 14µ and maximum 90µ without using an air gap or creating new materials.

We share an analytical method to calculate the new overall permeability of combined cores, an iterative procedure to calculate the required number of turns for such a mixed permeability choke, and demonstrate the approach and supporting analysis methods on an example of a combined choke design.
