FLIR Boson brings big benefits to multiple applications in a small, efficient design FLIR named its new mini-thermal camera core ‘Boson’ for a very specific reason. The name originates from quantum mechanics and is a subatomic particle which provides mass to other particles. As its nomenclature suggests, FLIR’s new camera is small but brings huge benefits to the systems and applications it is applied to.

It is the smallest high-performance uncooled thermal camera to ever come from FLIR. Despite its compact size, just 4.9cm3, FLIR’s XIR™ infrared video processing architecture, an industry-leading system-on-a-chip design, is embedded within the camera itself.

It is the first thermal camera core to incorporate a sophisticated multi-core vision processor unit, which enables advanced image processing and analytics within the camera. FLIR has taken this a stage further, with several industry-standard communication interfaces enabling designers and OEMs to access the internal processing power of Boson.

Like the subatomic particle it is named after, Boson is extremely lightweight, starting at just 7.5 grams. However, where Boson particles provide mass to others, FLIR’s Boson core provides imaging processing power to the designs and applications it is embedded without significant weight gain or additional power requirements.

With embedded processing power within the camera body, power consumption can be kept to a minimum and external processors are no longer required, further reducing weight, power and size requirements.

Boson, the smartest thermal core on the planet, is available with 15 lens options and two resolutions, 640x512 or 320x256. It’s compact, lightweight design, power efficiency and embedded processing capabilities make it suitable for more applications than any other thermal core. With multiple interfaces, Boson can be incorporated in designs for a variety of applications, including military, automotive, security, firefighting and even drones.
