Designing-out risk in an airborne power supply

A major manufacturer of civil and military aircraft presented Acal BFi’s design team the challenge of creating a power supply for an airborne communication system, which need to meet tight mechanical constraints, achieve very low electrical noise, keep heat dissipation to a minimum, and provide a constant output voltage despite an intermittent input supply.
The design process not only covered the usual requirements of concept review for the power supply, component selection, PCB layout and prototyping, but also featured a degree of risk management.
Fibre optics put to the test for Airbus A400M

As the new super airlifter for the 21st century, the A400M has been designed to fulfil multiple operational goals and to set new benchmarks for performance expectations. In its role as a dual airlifter and tactical fuel tanker for in-flight refuelling, verifying the accuracy and reliability of the fuel management system is critical.
That is why, as specialists in fibre-optic connectors and cables for harsh environments, Acal BFi were asked to adapt and re-work the custom Airbus test rigs after a critical connector in the fuel system was upgraded.
